Description
Azithromycin; It is of Semi Synthetic origin and belongs to the Azalide group. It belongs to the antibacterial (Protein synthesis inhibitor) pharmacological group on the basis of mechanism of action and also classified in antibiotics pharmacological group. Azithromycin interferes with protein synthesis in bacteria and in this way it prevents bacterial growth. It works by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, thus inhibiting translation of mRNA while nucleic acid synthesis is not affected. Oral absorption of Azithromycin is found to be 34% ±19. Volume of distribution is found to be 31.1 U/kg and plasma protein binding is 51%. Renal Excretion accounts for < 10% and plasma half-life is 68%.
